Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Index Tutorial ![]() How do I search the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette On-line Index?
This Index consists of brief summarizing statements of the news of Arkansas as published in the final, Little Rock edition of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. The ATU Library’s corresponding microfilm collection is of this final Little Rock edition, as well. Use the following links for further search instructions.
Only those articles dealing with Arkansas people, places and events are considered for inclusion. Pertinent articles that apply to events or people located out of state, but that have Arkansas connections, have the location in parenthesis following the subject heading:
Material not considered useful for future reference is omitted. Routine articles reporting on most sporting events, social events and business activities are omitted, as are most obituaries.
Subject headings are the main type of entry and are used when possible. Names of prominent people, firms and organizations are used as entries, but most names are cross-referenced to subjects. Due to the amount of material or the nature of some headings, geographical and political subdivisions are added, for clarification.
To perform a search: 1. Enter search term(s) in the "Subject" field, i.e.: "telephone service". Searches are not case sensitive. 2. Click "Search". ![]() When it is impractical to list the names of all the people or organizations in the summaries, cross references are made from the names to the appropriate subject headings.
![]() Click on "TELEPHONE SERVICE".
Cross references under a subject heading are referred to as “Additional References,” and are arranged in alphabetical order. These cross references are searchable by clicking on the appropriate link. The articles are identified by title, date (mm/dd/yyyy), page (section and page), and column. ![]() Not all geographic locations are followed by Arkansas or Ark; however, for clarification, it is added to the names of some towns if the names are used for towns outside of Arkansas.
Book reviews are entered under the subject BOOKS AND WRITING - Reviews.
Enter "Books and writing - reviews" in the "Subject" field and click "Search". The result is as shown here. ![]() Click on the subject heading.
Entries are confined to publications by Arkansas authors, or those with Arkansas settings or subject matter. ![]() The heading BOOKS AND WRITING is used for articles on books or writing in general.
Names are entered in the index as they appear in the newspaper. Because verification of a name is often impossible, identical names for different people may have been entered under the same heading. Names beginning with MAC and MC are arranged as spelled. Citations are arranged alphabetically for most entries under the subject headings; however, citations with quotation marks, parentheses or numerals appear first in the list.
Obituaries for prominent citizens are included, with entries, also, under the name of the deceased.
Deaths other than obituaries are included under such headings as: Reference from a person’s name to a subject does not indicate if the named person is directly involved or is merely mentioned under the topic. In all cases, the article should be read for clarification of this point.
The search for Mandleco, Walter offers the following results. ![]() ![]() The mention of this person's name does not indicate involvement in the murder. Clicking on the link leads us to a new subject.
![]() These are the final results. Rather, Mandleco was mentioned in relation to finding the body.
![]() Some articles titles include mention of illustrations such as photographs, charts, maps, etc. These are noted between parentheses at the end of the article title.
For the most efficient searching, please keep in mind the following when using our site:
This is not searching all the text of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette site. It only searches through titles and abstracts as compiled by the indexer. It is doing relevance matching only on words exactly as entered. It cannot do Boolean searching (AND, OR, NOT, +, -) or phrase searching (these words in conjunction with these words.) Results are sorted alphabetically, with quotation marks and numerals arranged first in the lists. The broader the search terms entered, the more results that will appear. A search for CLINTON, BILL will result in thousands of entries, but a search for CLINTON, BILL - International Relations - Korea, North will result in very few entries. When in doubt about a specific subject heading, any part of a heading will retrieve results. It is possible to further search the Arkansas Democrat Gazette on-line archives at http://www.ardemgaz.com/ for relevant articles that appear in other editions of the paper that are not included in this index; i.e., the Northwest Arkansas edition. EXAMPLE: In the search box, type Briley, Jacob and click "Archives". ![]() The first citation is taken directly from the on-line Arkansas Democrat Gazette Digital Archive. It appeared in the Northwest edition, Fayetteville, but was not included in the last Little Rock edition for that date.
The second citation appeared in the Little Rock edition. ![]() Searches are free in the on-line Arkansas Democrat Gazette Digital Archive; however, printouts of articles are $1.95 each, directly from the Democrat Gazette website.
