The Rolling Stone: Fiscal Close and Fund Structure Design | This presentation will review our preparations for beginning the Voyager fiscal close process at our community college library. Our examination of the reasons to conduct a fiscal close led us to re-examine our fund structure. This led us into a new fund structure design and a pilot project to test the use of reporting funds for tracking curriculum-based purchases. We have found that introducing the fiscal close process has caused us to explore our mission of fiscal responsibility and the procedures that enable us to achieve that goal. | Judith Guzzy, JCCC

Adapting a Library Website Using User-Centered Design: The Good, the Bad, and the Merely Pretty | Now that you have the knowledge and expertise to customize Voyager products, how do you choose what to do and where to put it? This session will briefly cover the principles of user-centered design (UCD). By knowing one's users and their top library website tasks, one can adapt a site to make it simple and focused. Examples of library websites will be shown as well as some common design mistakes to avoid. | Barb Longair, ATU
3:00 - 3:50 |
CS#8 |
Database Maintenance on a Shoestring | What can you do when you have creativity, a willingness to learn Access, a backlog of worthy database maintenance projects, and little or no money? Surprisingly, quite a bit! This presentation will focus on various database maintenance workflows, simple Access queries used, and ways to make progress on various database maintenance projects in a tight fiscal year. | Michelle Turvey, KSU
3:00 - 3:50 |
CS#9 |
New Books Display Using Access and Pick & Scan | Trinity University Coates Library has developed a special shelving area that features newly cataloged materials for patrons to browse. Materials in this location are also visible to users of the online catalog. This session will tell the story of this project, from using pick & scan and Access reports, to creating attractive display of materials, as well as discussing suggested guidelines and pitfalls to avoid. Attendees will leave with a good idea of how to plan and implement a "new books shelf" location both physically and in the catalog. | Jane Costanza, Trinity University
4:00 - 4:50 |
CS#10 |
Database Principles in Reporting (SQL) and Learning from Voy-L | What can we learn from Voyager-L about Relational Databases and how to design reports? This session will highlight Relational Database design, principles, and SQL reporting for the practitioner. We will look at some of the SQL reporting requests that have come across the Voyager Listserv and see why they did not work and how to properly write that query. Some of the topics covered will include proper "parent-child" table relationships, proper table design and relations while in the Design View, proper de-duping technique, how to use dates properly, what to do with a Rollback Segment error message, and some time saving techniques. Some Voyager table problems, such as "do not use the View tables", the problem with the Bib_Location table, and how to export query results that have more than 255 characters in a field (MS Excel limit). Proper technique helps in database reporting results. | Michael North, KSU

Making PHP Work for You: Generating Real-Time, Customized Oracle Reports for the Web | You can create your own dynamic web reports using PHP and Oracle. PHP gives you the flexibility to create site-specific reporting solutions for your institution. Learn the basic concepts needed to get started with your own PHP-Oracle web reports and get a first-hand look at the reports and projects currently in place at Arkansas Tech University. | Lynn Calhoun, ATU

The Joys and Challenges of Cataloging E-Books | This session will cover various aspects of cataloging e-books, including record selection, the pros and cons of using vendor-supplied records, bulk editing record sets, and bulkimporting the record sets into Voyager. Record display in WebVoyage will also be discussed. | Angela Jones & Debbie Montgomery, UT-Dallas
9:00 - 9:50 |
CS#14 |
Using EndNote® to Compile Bibliographies from the WebVoyàge OPAC | EndNote® can be used to search the WebVoyàge OPAC as well as commercial databases, and to create bibliographies from the search results. The OPAC and/or databases can be searched by either a direct connection or a Z39.50 connection. EndNote® is compatible with Microsoft® Word and Corel® WordPerfect™, and provides different citation styles for output. Many campuses have site licenses available, and already have connection files set, but if your library doesn't, this session will give you information on how to set up connection files and filters to work with your WebVoyàge OPAC. | Kathryn Broad, OCU-Law
9:00 - 9:50 |
CS#15 |
RSS Feeds for Recently Cataloged Materials | This presentation will profile a program recently developed in perl using the DBI, DBD::Oracle, and MARC::Record modules that produces RSS feeds for recently cataloged materials from the Voyager database. This application generates up to 325 subject-oriented RSS feeds daily based on LC, SuDoc, NLM, and Dewey call numbers for use in a campus portal system. Included in the presentation will be background on what RSS feeds are and how they can be used, the design and implementation of this application, and the challenges of promoting the use of a service like this on campus. | Doug Anderson, U. Alabama
10:10 - 11:00 |
CS#16 |
Acquisitions Activities and Year End Procedures: Looking at SysAdmin & Acquisitions | Areas to be included: establishing a fund structure; creating PO’s that will remain open and roll over to the new fiscal period; the role of the system administrator in completing a successful FPC; how to use the reports to achieve a successful FPC; dealing with problem records; what must be done to begin ordering/paying in the new fiscal year. | Jean Vik & Jane Hoorman, UT-Dallas
10:10 - 11:00 |
CS#17 |
Different Faces of the BLOB | This presentation will cover the different Blob Functions and their programming techniques. These techniques will cover collecting tag or subfield specific information. Finally, when you get the information, how to get it into another format for easy manipulation (Excel, Word, etc). | Michael North, KSU
10:10 - 11:00 |
CS#18 |
Customized Statistical Report Interface | The presentation will cover how to create a customized statistical report interface and its features. This web based interface is completely flexible. Library staff can use the interface to generate statistical reports they want without knowing any SQL languages and data structures. The report can be defined by range in any fields or combined fields; the result then can be grouped by any meaningful fields and can be sorted in ASC or DESC order, even after the report has been generated. To cut responding time, some of the data sources are populated from querying the Voyager database, and refresh the data sources on a regular basis. The reports generated in the customized interface can be printed in printing format, or saved as Excel files for further manipulation. The interface significantly reduces the report creation time, and increases the productivity. | Hongfei Li, WSU
11:10 - 12:00 |
CS#19 |
What is Meridian? | Managing electronic resources is a challenging task, unless you have the right tools. Meridian is designed to consolidate and administer the complex data related to resources, packages and licenses. This presentation provides a walk-through of Meridian workflows, demonstrates the interaction between Voyager and Meridian, and describes how this new system can radically improve electronic resource administration in your library. | Endeavor Staff
